KEYNOTE - Dr. Patricia Guerra
Demographic shifts are bringing schools more culturally, linguistically, and economically diverse populations than ever before. Educators are striving to respond, but many lack the necessary cultural responsiveness to meet the needs of a diverse student population. Unaware of the influence of culture on teaching and learning, educators often make assumptions about diverse students, which limits students’ opportunities to learn through over-reliance on teacher-centered instruction, low student expectations, drill and kill instruction, disproportionate placement in special education and gifted education and over-referral to discipline. When teachers are culturally responsive, they have high levels of achievement for all students, minimal failures or dropouts, equitable enrollment in gifted and advanced placement classes, few and more valid referrals to special education, and fewer discipline problems.
This session looks at the influence of culture on teaching and learning in the classroom and how cultural responsiveness can increase learning opportunities for diverse students and thereby increase their achievement.

KEYNOTE: STEP UP to Brain Breaks in the Classroom!
Our student’s brains are similar to computers.  Sometimes we have to hit the reset button on the brain to gain optimal performance.  Learn how ongoing research shows how the brain is affected by long periods of inactivity and how short brain breaks can increase student retention. Explore the structure of the brain to understand why we have to teach with the brain on our minds! Teachers will learn how to incorporate  fun brain breaks into the classroom!  Teachers will leave with brain breaks that can be used silently during testing to energize students and refocus their attention and brain breaks that can increase student participation in classroom activities. This workshop is appropriate for every grade level. Join us for an exciting and fun workshop that shows exactly how to incorporate brain breaks in the classroom with ease.

Using Glue to STEP UP to Learning
Limited Capacity filling up

What makes learning "stick"? Do we know how to use glue for positive outcomes in our classrooms?  In the last twenty years research and technological advancements have led to a shift in how we view the human brain and teaching.  Yet, as teachers we are not given the time to catch up on brain-based research in order to incorporate this valuable information in our classrooms. Explore how to engage a student's brain in the learning process and discover why meaning is more important than information in improving student outcomes.  This workshop gets deeper into the "glue" of learning and gives concrete examples to make learning "stick" to the brain!
